The Ponta de São Lourenço hike explores Madeira’s easternmost peninsula, famous for its dramatic and almost untouched coastline. Unlike the lush Levada trails, this route offers a strikingly different landscape and is one of the island’s most popular walks. Classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European Natura 2000 network, it is home to about 140 plant species, including 31 found only in Madeira.
The path begins with gentle wooden steps and footbridges before climbing steeper slopes that revealweeping views of the Desertas Islands to the south and Porto Santo to the north (weather permitting). Along the way, you’ll enjoy vistas of both the northern and southern coasts.
At the far end lies Cais do Sardinha, a small oasis with palm trees and the only shaded rest area—ideal for a break or, in summer, a swim in the crystal-clear waters. It’s also a great spot to watch planes as they approach Madeira’s airport.
Because the peninsula is often windy and sunny, bring sun protection, a hat, and plenty of water. With its rugged scenery and rewarding views, this hike is a must-do experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
