Hiking Tour – Baías da Agualva – Half Day
The hiking path starts near Pico dos Loiros in the village of Agualva.
We start by going down into a dirt trail and after 500m we will reach to the stream of Grota da Lagoa and head towards to Fajãzinha village where we will be able to admire the view over the beach.
After a quick stop, we start the climb up a slope which is surrounded in coastal woodland and species such as Azores heather (Erica azorica) and fescue (Festuca petrae) until we reach the viewpoint over Fajãzinha.
Continuing the trail, we will find some columnar basalt disjunctions in the rocks and walls of the old vineyards until we reach Baía das Pombas This area is ideal for bird watching where it is possible to spot species which breed in the Azores including the common tern (Sterna hirundo), the Cory’s shear-water (Calonectris diomedea borealis) and the Azores wood pigeon (Columba palumbus azorica).
In the final part of this trail, we will see a small coastal lagoon in the rocks. The path continues between pastureland and cliffs amid fire trees (Morella faya), Azores heathers and Australian cheese-wood (Pittosporum undulatum).
